Deadline: July 29, 2009
Active Living Research is a national program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation that supports research to identify promising policy and environmental strategies for increasing physical activity, decreasing sedentary behaviors, and preventing obesity among children and adolescents. The program puts special emphasis on strategies with the potential to reach racial/ethnic populations and children living in lower-income communities who are at highest risk for obesity.
This funding opportunity provides two types of grants. Support for research will be provided through the foundation's New Connections program, and for research or publication through its Active Living Research program.
To be eligible, investigators must represent populations historically disadvantaged and underrepresented in research, including racial/ethnic minority researchers, those from lower-income communities, and first-generation college graduates. Applicants must have completed a doctorate or terminal degree (e.g., Ph.D., M.D., J.D.) within the past seven years (after September 1, 2002), must demonstrate evidence of research skills relevant to the proposed study or publication, and must be affiliated with or sponsored by a university or an organization that is tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and is not a private foundation under Section 509(a) of the Code.
A total of up to $336,000 will be awarded for research and publication grants. Four 12- to 18-month research grants will provide up to $75,000 each. Three 12-month publication grants will provide up to $12,000 each.

Deadline: July 15, 2009
The American Legion Child Welfare Foundation works to provide other nonprofit organizations with the means to educate the public about the needs of children across the United States.
The foundation accepts funding proposals from nonprofit organizations for projects that meet one of the foundation's two basic purposes:
1) to contribute to the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual welfare of children through the dissemination of knowledge about new and innovative organizations and/or their programs designed to benefit youth; and 2) to contribute to the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual welfare of children through the dissemination of knowledge already possessed by well-established organizations to the end that such information can be more adequately used by society.
Grants must have the potential to help American children in a large geographic area (more than one state). Grants will be awarded to nonprofit tax-exempt organizations only. Grants are not made for any of the normal day-to-day operating expenses of the grantee or special operating expenses connected with the grant. Grants are awarded for one year. In past award cycles, grants have ranged from $1,500 to $70,000 each.

Deadline: October 15, 2009
AAHD created the AAHD Scholarship Program to support students with
disabilities who are pursuing higher education. Preference will be given to
students who plan to pursue undergraduate/graduate studies in public
health, health promotion, or disability studies, to include disability
policy and disability research. As 2009 is the first year of the
scholarship program, funds are limited and we anticipate that scholarships
will be competitive. Scholarships will be limited to under $1,000.
