Program to Enhance the Health and Development of Infants and Children (PEHDIC)
In summer 2009, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) was awarded the Program to Enhance the Health and Development of Infants and Children (PEHDIC)—a 5-year cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The PEHDIC activities are primarily housed within the AAP Division of Children with Special Needs.
The goals of the PEHDIC are to link the physician community at the national, state, and local levels to activities that support:
- health promotion and disease prevention for newborns and infants;
- child development and health;
- early hearing detection and intervention;
- early identification of children with developmental disabilities;
- prevention of secondary conditions in children with disabilities;
- health promotion for children with disabilities; and
- transition to adult life
The PEHDIC aims to translate critical research and guidelines, focused on preventive health care, continuity of care, and transition to adulthood, into practice as well as expand provider and public education related to health promotion and disease prevention. In the first year of the agreement, the PEHDIC will focus on early hearing detection and intervention, fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, birth defects—specifically congenital heart defects, newborn screening, and H1N1 influenza recommendations for children with special health care needs.
